Commissioning a Portrait
Commissioning a portrait is a collaboration between you and me — a creative partnership built on trust, conversation, and care. Without sounding too over the top, it truly is an act of love: a celebration of connection, a way of honouring someone special, and the creation of something that will last a lifetime and beyond.
A portrait becomes a family heirloom — something powerful and deeply personal — a visual expression of affection that can be treasured for generations.
Even if the client is the subject, this still holds true. It’s a way of acknowledging your own story, marking a moment in time, and celebrating who you are.
No commitment is made until you are completely happy with the process and confident that what we plan together feels right. I’m always happy to chat and discuss your ideas, either over the phone or in person, before we begin. There’s no rush — every detail can be tailored to suit your wishes.
The Process
-
Finding the right reference
The first step is selecting a suitable reference image. The photograph is absolutely key — it sets the tone for the entire piece. Ideally, it shouldn’t be taken on a phone (though modern phones can produce excellent results). What matters most is that the image has enough clarity and detail for me to work from, and that the pose feels natural and relaxed. The best portraits come from moments that feel genuine — a look, a gesture, or an expression that truly captures the subject’s character.
Big smiles can sometimes appear a little forced in painted form, although in some cases they can work well. -
Discussing style and medium
Next, we’ll talk about your vision for the portrait — the style, the atmosphere, and the medium you prefer. Whether you’re drawn to the richness of oil, the delicacy of watercolour, or the simplicity of charcoal or graphite (a more affordable option), we’ll choose the approach that best reflects both the subject and the setting where the finished piece will hang.
We can also discuss composition, background, and colour palette to make sure everything feels cohesive and personal. -
Securing your commission
Once we’ve agreed on all the details, a 50% deposit secures the commission. This allows me to begin the work and reserve your place in my schedule. I’ll keep you informed throughout the process so you always know how things are progressing. -
Review and feedback
When the portrait is complete, I’ll send you a high-quality photograph of the artwork for review. At this stage, you’ll have the opportunity to suggest any minor adjustments or refinements. My goal is for you to feel completely happy with the finished piece — to see not just a likeness, but a sense of life and presence captured on canvas or paper. -
Framing and delivery
Once you’re entirely satisfied, I can offer guidance on framing — from traditional to contemporary styles — or you’re welcome to arrange framing yourself. Your finished portrait will be carefully packaged and shipped with full insurance for peace of mind.Postage is free and secure, wherever you are.
